Yet, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for company. On one such day because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plot.
Narratives of wild beasts prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One afternoon he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills for rescue but found no read more wolf.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This prank continued for a few more days. However, one noon, a real wolf actually attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
